Gravatars (Globally Recognised Avatars)

Gravatar Comments
Over at Aidan?s blog he has just installed some code to display gravatars (Globally Recognised Avatars) on his site. Basically you register your email at site.gravatar.com and assign a thumbnail image to it, and when you comment on anyone?s blog who has added the gravatar script your image will show when you comment.

Of course I cheated and just installed a plugin, meaning I only had to add a pre-defined bit of code to my comments.php and style.css files in my template.

It may not add anything great to the site but at least it makes the individual comments stand out more and add more of an identity to them.

The only problem I?ve stumbled on so far is that when I visited Aidan?s blog and commented, my gravatar was still displayed using the default thumb, and I guess this is because it is stored in the cache along with my email address. I think it may be prudent to clear the cache every so often so that the images are refreshed from gravatar.com which should solve this, although it?s good to keep images cached to improve page load times.

    Yeah, they?re pretty cool aren?t they :-) .

I have noticed, however, that yours is still not showing up on my blog! You refer to clearing the cache for you, but I am not sure what you mean.

I know how to clear the cache on my browser but that won?t make a difference to you, therefore I assume you mean clear the cache of the blog which I don?t actually know how to do?

I?ve got an option to do this in my gravatars plugin menu, but obviously you I mentioned the cache thing as Iā€™ve got an option to do this in my gravatars plugin menu.

ā€œDeleting a cached gravatar will force your blog to request the latest version (if any) from gravatar.com.ā€

I assumed (wrongly) that the default image had been assigned to me and was stored in your gravatars cacheā€¦.but I donā€™t think you have that and it calls directly from gravatar.com

In the end it was because the email address in my autofill had one uppercase character in it and this wasn?t recognised by gravatar.com.

It?s always the simple things eh?

I have absolutely no idea what you are going on about in this post. I think it all in a foreign language called ?Nerdlish?. Aren?t avatars sunglasses that pilots wear?

One more try. Aidan?s too clogged up already, so pardon me for trying yours. If it doesn?t work, it?s coz I?m tired and I?ll read the whole thing again tomorrow.

I know it sounds silly but have you actually asigned a different image for your gravatar?

I?m a wee bit drunk but can tell you that people without gravatars on this blog simply get a ?gravatar? text for their image, but you actually get an thumnail which makes me think you?ve partly configured your gravatar but only with a default image?.

or it could be the bottle of 2005 Chenin Blanc Chardonnay I?ve just drunk?.
