I play in a pool league on Thursdays for the in Ramsgate and although it?s good to get out on a weeknight, have few beers, play some pool, and have a chat, one of the unexpected benefits is getting to visit other pubs as all the league matches are played on a home and away basis. Contrary to popular belief I haven?t been in every pub in Thanet and so this is a good excuse to see a few more.
Some pubs are very dindgy and I wouldn?t go in them again but yesterday we had a 3-man cup knockout fixture against the Oddfellows and were playing down at the Derby Arms, a pub I?ve passed many times but have never ventured into and I have to say I was suitably impressed. Nice clean decor, friendly staff, good toilets, good beer, and most importantly a good pool table in their conservatory extension.
I like pubs to be honest and not too pretentious and now I can add the Derby Arms to my acceptable list, which sadly isn?t too long due to the quota of winebars or Thorley Taverns in Thanet, but at least there are still some good pubs around.
